Startups to Unicorns

18% of all startups in India are into deep tech such as AI, ML, AR/VR, Blockchain, IoT and so on. Around 1600 deep tech startups came up just between 2014-2019 and are growing at a CAGR of 40%. The availability of large volumes of data in the past few years and improvement in computing power of devices are responsible for growth of deep tech startups in India. It is the right time to create, innovate, and leverage these technologies for unprecedented customer experience and business growth. There is also a big swing in the startup space as they are centering on business-to-business model. Solutions based on deep tech solve real-life problems and challenges when it comes to food, energy, water, and national security. In Addition, Deep tech companies can offer exciting job opportunities to engineers and help in keeping the talent within our shores. It is crucial for Governments, large corporates and established entrepreneurs should step in to provide capital, mentorship, and guidance to promising start-ups. This session would analyze the current state of the Indian startup ecosystem and look up three aspects: to provide an understanding of the growth drivers and motivations of Indian startup founders; identify challenges facing these startups; and outline the pillars in place that support them especially how Policymakers and investors should support bringing more people to become entrepreneurs, and also sustain towards scaling their businesses, given deep tech startups go through a different evolution cycle than a typical B2B or B2C company.

IT-ITeS – Driving Business Innovation through Technologies

The IT-ITeS sector is the major economic driver of the state for over a couple of decade and employs over 7,00,000 people. Chennai is also the third-largest exporter of electronic hardware in the country with exports revenues in 2017-18 accounting for US $1.27 billion. (Anuj Puri, Anarock ). Businesses having a technology-first approach have found opportunities in the confluence of IT & the physical operational world, largely in sectors such as Fintech, Manutech etc. Sessions around the how IT/OT convergence is redefining mobility and Blockchains driving Crypto-currency & Non Fungible Tokens, are some elements that have been planned and panelists there would share intelligent insigghts around those technologies.

However, It is no longer enough to be front-runner in adoption of IT in the state; we must find its place in the global race to achieve tech leadership. There are immense synergies and prospects to position TN as a hub of Global Captive Centres (GCC) and also ERS (Engineering, R & D Services) as key anchors and attract global companies to partner with the Government of Tamil Nadu. These session would have Policymakers and leading organizations explore marketing TN better as India’s innovation hub and knowledge capital, given the state is a hotbed of talent.

Covid sent an important message, that no one is safe until the last one is safe. Technology is that element which can enable the reach out of critical services to a wider population.

Technology & MSME – Avenue for Sustained Growth

Technological obsolescence and sub-optimal scale are two critically distinguishing features of Indian MSMEs for Majority of India’s Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), that employ over 120 million people and contribute significantly to the GDP.

Small businesses don't necessarily have the resources to make large investments in technology but the disruption has made them realise how adopting to digital can help them take advantage of opportunities in today's changing environment. Many of them are looking to reaping benefits of digitalization/ technology adoption, and leverage newer technologies like cloud computing, IoT, consumer analytics. The first session panel would largely dwells into major challenges for policymakers and large industries towards the modernization of the MSME sector remains around how to accelerate technological upgradation and modernization of more and more MSMEs, and how they can support.

Moreover, with digital technology adoption, data has value to hackers because it has value to a business, no matter what the size of the organisation. In fact, SMEs are easier pickings for hackers due to their lack of cybersecurity. As this can jeopardise a whole business structure, we deliberate how every SME need to make protecting their network a top priority.

Increased automation, shifts in the culture of work, and new organizational models, are becoming more urgent. With the next era of human-machine partnerships around the corner, its more relevant to prepare our workforce with relevant skills of the future. It is critical to deeply explore both the universe of future skills themselves, as well as the ways that they are currently taught and measured, in the hope that they can be more fully integrated into workforce training, thus concentrating on a core set of fundamental skills that potential employees need in the workplace.

Unlocking the Indian economy to the world economy during a process of de-globalization is not an easy task. India’s current position in the global economy offers opportunities to strengthen itself even in a more fragmented global economy, and to further strengthen this position, it could be important to address many domestic distortions, and also make a renewed policy-focus around the make-in-India initiative, to realize the coming-of-age of India’s manufacturing potential. How can Indian capitalize on these advantages and opportunities? How should India adopt a phased strategy, prioritizing several immediate, medium, and long-term components?Would moving up the value chain be far easier when there is an underlying ecosystem, or should India consider a calibrated approach to identify global supply-chains, and invite companies to manufacture in India’s eastern coast and traditional manufacturing.

Role of Government in the New Digital Age

The Digital Government Strategy typically should enable its citizens and an increasingly mobile workforce to access high-quality digital government information and services anywhere, anytime, on any device. It would be interesting to understand how the government departments are adjusting to this new digital world, and provide opportunity to enable the public, entrepreneurs, and own government programs to better leverage the rich wealth of federal data to pour into applications and services by ensuring that data is open and machine-readable by default. The roundtable can deliberate on how governments can create an information-centric approach to address the reach and value to government services by helping to surface the best information and making it widely available through a variety of useful formats, and also have a customer-centric approach to allow customers to shape, share and consume information, whenever and however they want it.

Work From Home (WFH) Policies

There are a whole host of things one needs to start relooking at when work from home becomes the new norm, as it has been seen in this pandemic. Multiple models are emerging, and it could be a physical-digital world co-existing, making things a bit complex, with companies adopting remote working in varying degree. This session needs to deliberate around concessions and policy framework that requires a holistic approach across various segments / departments to facilitate this significant transition. Panelist may explore relaxation of telecom regulations that allow back-office companies to work from home and move equipment out from designated special economic zones to facilitate remote working, to relook at employer's role with respect to safety and health measures at workplace. Then there are changes in labour laws to redefine working hours and shift timings, and expenses incurred by employers to enable WFH as business expenses. Questions like how you build trust in a culture where landing up in office is seen as part of your commitment to work.

The Automation of Everything Era

In spite of the enormous impact that automation will have on our way of life,we need to create an environment which acts as an ‘incubator’ for automation technologies to thrive and develop. It must be equipped to capture their value, be it across both the elements of automation from a business perspective: industrial automation and information automation. We are making quantum leaps in everyday technologies. The super-intelligence of the future as “an intellect that is much smarter than the best human brains" in practically every field, including scientific creativity, general wisdom and social skills is quite possibly the most important and most daunting challenge humanity has ever faced. It’s always thrilling to take a look into the future and see what is possible. But it is even more so when these future possibilities are already manifesting as real opportunities. This session would outline this new reality from a technology and business value point of view, and try identify the critical steps required for each industry.

MSMEs on Opportunities, Strength and Challenges of the Digital growth

MSMEs are the backbone of any industrial economy, and as in larger part of the world, most transformations have happened on the back of robust industrial sector, and MSMEs have played a critical role in these transformations. The MSME sector has the potential to spread industrial growth across the country and can be a major partner in the process of inclusive growth. The current riding tension between localization and globalization would in fact lead us to re-think our strategies and supply chains. This session would look into areas that could help capitalize on the opportunities and the potential to reduce the existing challenges. Other key questions to address could range from whether adopting the cluster development approach be a key strategy for enhancing the productivity and competitiveness as well as capacity building of MSME, to how to support the sustainability and growth of MSEs by addressing common issues such as improvement of technology, skills and quality, market access, access to capital, etc.
